Two New Faces in Australia’s T20 Squad

Australia have unveiled a 17-man squad for their upcoming three-match T20 International series against Pakistan, introducing two fresh faces as part of their preparations ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The series will be played entirely in Lahore, starting on 29 January, and forms a crucial bridge between Australia’s domestic Big Bash League (BBL) and their global campaign.

The touring party will be led by Mitchell Marsh and includes first-time T20I call-ups for fast bowler Mahli Beardman and all-rounder Jack Edwards. While Australia continue to fine-tune their World Cup combinations, only ten members of the provisional World Cup group will feature in this series. Several senior figures — including Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Hazlewood, Tim David and Nathan Ellis — will instead link up with the squad in Sri Lanka as part of the broader World Cup build-up.

Chief selector George Bailey said the Pakistan series had been designed to test players on the fringe of the starting XI while also fast-tracking younger talent into high-pressure international environments. He noted that Beardman has spent considerable time around the national set-up, while Edwards gained valuable exposure during Australia’s final ODI against India last year. According to Bailey, conditions in Pakistan will provide an ideal learning curve for emerging players expected to contribute at future global tournaments.

Both newcomers earned their places through strong BBL performances. Edwards impressed for Sydney Sixers, claiming 15 wickets at an average of 18.33, underlining his value as a reliable all-round option. Beardman, just 20, showcased pace and control for Perth Scorchers, taking eight wickets and further enhancing his reputation as a long-term prospect. He was also part of Australia’s most recent T20 squad against India, although he did not make his debut then.

The squad also features a blend of experience and versatility in players such as Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa. However, the scheduling overlap with the BBL final means several squad members may miss the opening match of the series.

Following the Pakistan tour, Australia will officially launch their T20 World Cup campaign on 11 February with a match against Ireland, making the Lahore series an important final examination of depth, adaptability and form.
