The financial landscape of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed a transformative development following the confirmation that Lakshmi Mittal, the distinguished industrialist widely known as the “Steel Magnate,” has acquired a controlling interest in the Rajasthan Royals. This significant mid-season acquisition sees the league’s inaugural champions move under the stewardship of Mr Mittal and the prominent billionaire philanthropist, Adar Poonawalla.
A formal joint statement issued today detailed the comprehensive restructuring of the franchise’s ownership. The transaction values the Rajasthan Royals and its associated international sporting ventures at an enterprise value of approximately $1.65 billion (roughly £1.3 billion or 20,250 crore BDT). This record-breaking valuation highlights the escalating commercial prestige of the IPL and represents one of the most substantial capital investments in the history of professional global cricket.
A Synergy of Global Industrial Leaders
The newly established ownership framework is a collaborative venture between two of India’s most formidable corporate figures. Lakshmi Mittal, the Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal—the world’s foremost steel and mining enterprise—brings unparalleled global business acumen to the franchise. Through this acquisition, the Mittal family has secured a dominant 75% stake in the organisation.
Partnering in this significant investment is Adar Poonawalla, the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India and Chairman of Poonawalla Fincorp. Based in Pune, the Serum Institute maintains its status as the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume. Mr Poonawalla’s acquisition of an 18% stake provides the franchise with additional financial depth and strategic backing.
The remaining equity is held by the existing investor group, which includes the former majority owner, Manoj Badale. To ensure a smooth transition and institutional continuity, Mr Badale will remain an integral part of the franchise’s leadership, retaining his position on the board to oversee governance and long-term developmental strategies.
Integration of a Multi-National Cricket Portfolio
The $1.65 billion enterprise value is reflective of a broader acquisition that extends beyond the Indian sub-continent. The deal includes the entirety of the “Royals” global cricket portfolio, granting the Mittal and Poonawalla families oversight of a diverse international network:
Rajasthan Royals: The flagship franchise competing in the Indian Premier League.
Paarl Royals: A premier team within South Africa’s SA20 competition.
Barbados Royals: A highly competitive side in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
This cross-border acquisition establishes the new owners as central figures in the international T20 circuit, facilitating advanced talent identification and global brand expansion.
Heritage, Vision, and Cultural Ties
In the official announcement, Lakshmi Mittal emphasised the deep-seated personal connection that motivated the investment. With ancestral roots tied to the state of Rajasthan, he noted: “I have a great passion for cricket, and given my family’s ties to Rajasthan, there could be no team closer to my heart than the Rajasthan Royals.”
Adar Poonawalla echoed these sentiments, expressing his pride in supporting a franchise with such a “glorious heritage” and affirming his commitment to the team’s sustained growth. Manoj Badale, in welcoming the new majority owners, described them as “ideal custodians” whose ambition and connection to India align perfectly with the franchise’s future objectives.
Aiming for a Historic Second Title
The Rajasthan Royals famously secured the first-ever IPL trophy in 2008 under the visionary captaincy of the late Shane Warne. Despite that early milestone, the franchise has endured an eighteen-year interval without a championship title. However, the current campaign has demonstrated a marked improvement in form, aided by the emergence of promising young talents such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
Currently, the Royals occupy the fourth position on the league table, having amassed 12 points from 10 fixtures. They remain in direct contention for the top spot, trailing the current leaders, Punjab Kings, by only one point. The arrival of the Mittal and Poonawalla families, coupled with substantial new investment, is expected to provide the strategic momentum required for the Royals to return to the pinnacle of the IPL.
