In a dramatic turn of events, Scotland has unexpectedly secured a spot in the ICC T20 World Cup, stepping in after Bangladesh declined to participate due to security concerns in India. The International Cricket Council (ICC) extended the invitation, allowing Scotland to compete in the prestigious tournament. Cricket Scotland confirmed its squad yesterday, with Chief Executive Trudy Lindblade expressing solidarity and sympathy for the Bangladeshi players.
Scotland has been placed in Group C, alongside India and Sri Lanka, replacing Bangladesh. The team has had to accelerate preparations at short notice to be ready for their opening match on 7 February. Despite the sudden call-up, Lindblade assured that Scotland is fully prepared to compete at the highest level.
When asked about sympathy towards Bangladesh, Lindblade said:
“Absolutely, we feel for the Bangladesh team. Clearly, this is not the way we wanted to reach the World Cup. There is always a process to qualify, and nobody wants to enter a World Cup without earning it in the usual way. We acknowledge that our participation is the result of extraordinary circumstances, and we genuinely feel for the Bangladeshi players.”
Addressing potential criticism that Scotland entered the tournament through a “back door,” she added:
“I won’t use those words. People are entitled to their opinions. We simply know we have been invited to participate. We are ranked 14th globally and have a team that plays regularly throughout the year. This is a strong, competitive squad.”
Lindblade also reflected on Scotland’s performance during the qualifiers, saying it did not reflect the team’s usual standards. “We are delighted to be in the World Cup. We fully recognise the exceptional and challenging circumstances,” she added.
Scotland narrowly missed out on qualification last July, losing to Italy and Jersey in the Europe regional final. Their sudden entry places them in Group B matches against West Indies, Italy, and England in Kolkata, followed by a fixture against Nepal in Mumbai. The top two teams from the group will progress to the Super Eight stage. Scotland has participated in six T20 World Cups to date, including the last four editions.
