Simmons Targets Fresh Test Milestone

Phil Simmons has stated that Bangladesh are aiming to create a new chapter in their Test history as they prepare to face Pakistan in the opening match of an upcoming series in Dhaka. The head coach emphasised that past achievements, including the landmark series win in Rawalpindi in 2024, should not distract the team from its present objectives.

During that 2024 tour, Bangladesh were led by Chandika Hathurusingha and secured a historic result in Test cricket. Prior to that series, Bangladesh had played 13 Tests against Pakistan without recording a single victory. However, the team broke that sequence emphatically by winning both matches in Rawalpindi, thereby completing a 2–0 series sweep on Pakistani soil. It marked one of the most significant achievements in Bangladesh’s Test history.

The forthcoming encounter will be the first Test meeting between the two sides since that series. The opening match is scheduled to begin on Friday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Mirpur, Simmons reiterated that the team’s focus is firmly on the present.

Referring to the Rawalpindi success, Simmons said: “That is history. It has gone. We want to create new history. We are looking towards Friday and will see what happens. What happened before does not matter now.”

At the same time, he acknowledged that the previous success could provide internal motivation. “Yes, it will remain in the mind. It gives you inner belief that you won the last match. But this is a new game, a new venue. We are now in Bangladesh, not Pakistan. We have to leave those things behind and focus on this match,” he added.

This match will mark Bangladesh’s first Test appearance of the current year. Their most recent Test series was played in November last year, when they defeated Ireland 2–0. In the intervening period, the team has largely been engaged in white-ball cricket. In March, Bangladesh won an ODI series against Pakistan, and more recently they played ODI and T20I series against New Zealand.

Simmons was asked whether the transition from white-ball to red-ball cricket might present challenges. He downplayed any such concerns, suggesting that the adjustment is largely mental. He noted that several players have continued to play red-ball cricket in recent months, which should ease the transition.

Addressing expectations, Simmons remarked that most of the pressure originates outside the dressing room. “I think 95 per cent of expectations are outside the dressing room. Those inside are less concerned than others. We are preparing ourselves and focusing on playing the match. Any expectations from previous series will not help us, so we are keeping them outside,” he said.
