Nasum’s Record Spell Powers Sylhet to Victory

Sylhet Titans’ much-anticipated encounter carried a distinct emotional flavour long before the first ball was bowled. A day earlier, the franchise had welcomed England all-rounder Moeen Ali with a light-hearted social media post, affectionately calling him “Dula Bhai”—a nod to his Bangladeshi family ties through his wife, whose ancestral home is in Sylhet. The message promised fireworks on the field. While Moeen’s debut itself proved understated, the night ultimately belonged to a local hero who delivered one of the most extraordinary bowling performances in Bangladesh Premier League history.

Making his first appearance for Sylhet Titans this season, Moeen Ali was unable to make a decisive impact with either bat or ball. Yet his debut match became historic thanks to left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, whose breathtaking spell dismantled Noakhali Express and guided Sylhet to a commanding six-wicket victory.

Batting first at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Noakhali Express were bundled out for a mere 61 runs—the fourth-lowest team total ever recorded in the BPL. The collapse was all the more startling given their steady start. After three overs, Noakhali had reached 24 without loss, appearing well placed to build a competitive total.

Nasum Ahmed changed the course of the match the moment he entered the attack in the fourth over. His very first delivery removed Soumya Sarkar, and within the same over Munim Shahriar also departed. The pressure intensified rapidly. In the following over, Habibur Rahman—who had looked aggressive with an 18-run knock off 16 balls—fell attempting to dominate, offering a simple catch that again involved Nasum’s sharp presence.

Even when wickets did not fall, Nasum’s control was relentless. He conceded just one run in the final over of the powerplay. Returning in the 11th over with Noakhali struggling at 45 for four, he trapped Haider Ali lbw, further tightening the noose.

The final over sealed his masterpiece. After allowing just a single run off the first two balls, Nasum struck twice in succession, dismissing Mehedi Hasan and Zahir Khan. The last ball accounted for Bilal Sami, completing a sensational five-wicket haul.

This was Nasum’s first five-wicket haul in a T20 career spanning 146 matches and over a decade in domestic cricket. More significantly, it became the best bowling figure by a Bangladeshi spinner in BPL history, surpassing Shakib Al Hasan’s 5 for 16 achieved in 2017. The overall BPL record remains with pacer Taskin Ahmed, who claimed 7 for 19 last season.

Chasing a modest target of 62, Sylhet Titans completed the task in just 8.4 overs, despite losing three wickets. Towfiq Khan Tushar top-scored with a fluent 32 off 18 balls. Moeen Ali remained unbeaten on one run from a single delivery, while also bowling two economical overs for six runs without taking a wicket.

The victory marked Sylhet Titans’ third win in six matches, strengthening their campaign. In contrast, Noakhali Express continued to struggle, remaining winless after four outings. Above all, the match will be remembered as the night Nasum Ahmed transformed promise into history, delivering a performance that resonated far beyond the scoreboard.
