Decision to Avoid India: Both Support and Concern

In a dramatic turn of events over the past 24 hours, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that the national team will not participate in the upcoming World Cup in India, citing security concerns. This decision follows the high-profile removal of star pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) amid threats from certain political and religious groups. The announcement, just over a month before the tournament, has sparked widespread debate among cricket officials, players, and fans regarding its potential impact.

Former national captain and BCB director Akram Khan has praised the board’s decision. Speaking to Prothom Alo, he emphasised the importance of prioritising players’ mental and physical well-being. “The players’ welfare must come first. If they are not mentally at ease, it becomes extremely difficult to perform at the highest level,” he stated. Akram highlighted that even though the team travelled to India for the T20 World Cup in February, the current circumstances could have caused undue stress for the players.

The controversy began when Kolkata Knight Riders purchased Mustafizur for ₹9.2 crore for the IPL season. However, following threats and under the guidance of the BCCI, the franchise released him, igniting concerns about player safety in India. Former BCB director Jalal Yunus interpreted the board’s decision as a firm message in response to these developments. “India has itself raised security questions. While Mustafizur was alone in the IPL, the World Cup squad will involve 25–30 players,” he noted.

However, opinions are divided. Another former BCB director, Ahmed Sajjadul Alam, warned that the move could have long-term repercussions for Bangladesh cricket. “At this stage, choosing not to play may not be appropriate. While security is important, solutions should be sought through dialogue between boards. Abrupt decisions could harm our cricket in the long run,” he cautioned.

National cricketer Rajin Saleh described Mustafizur’s exclusion as an affront, supporting the BCB’s choice to skip India as a form of protest. Meanwhile, Indian reactions have also been notable. Congress leader and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor tweeted that Bangladesh’s withdrawal is “embarrassing” for India, while acknowledging the decision was prompted by India’s actions.
