Mark Wood Injured, Ashes Hopes Dashed

England’s fast bowling spearhead Mark Wood will not feature in the remainder of the Ashes series after his knee injury worsened during the first Test in Perth. The news, though unfortunate, was expected by many observers following Wood’s limited play and ongoing fitness struggles. In his place, 28-year-old Matthew Fisher has been called up to the squad.

Wood, a 36-year-old veteran, had hoped to return for the final two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney. Yet the demands of international cricket combined with his age have prevented a full recovery. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Wood will return home later this week and work closely with the team’s medical professionals to ensure a careful rehabilitation process.

Wood’s knee troubles date back to February, when he underwent surgery during England’s Champions Trophy campaign. The Perth Test marked his first appearance in 15 months. However, the comeback did not go as planned; he bowled 11 overs without taking a wicket, as England succumbed to an eight-wicket defeat. He missed the second Test in Brisbane, which further compounded England’s Ashes woes as the series score now stands at 0-2.

Fisher’s inclusion provides England with a new weapon. The six-foot-two pacer has only one previous Test cap, earned against the West Indies in 2022. Already present in Australia with the England Lions, Fisher is expected to bring fresh energy to a depleted bowling attack in the third Test in Adelaide, starting on 17 December.

On the Australian side, news of Josh Hazlewood missing the series was announced earlier. However, Australia’s squad is strengthened by the return of Pat Cummins, and Usman Khawaja may also return after missing the second Test due to back issues. The hosts are currently leading 2-0 and will be eager to continue their dominance.

The loss of Wood represents a significant setback for England, whose pace attack now lacks experience. However, Fisher’s selection may offer a spark of hope for the visitors, who need a remarkable turnaround to remain competitive in the series.
