Ram Charan apologises over Bumrah comment

South Indian film star Ram Charan has found himself at the centre of online discussion after mistakenly referring to Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as a footballer during a public event in Bhopal, following which he issued a public apology.

The incident took place during a promotional event in Bhopal for the release of songs from the film Peddi, which features Ram Charan alongside Janhvi Kapoor and A. R. Rahman. During media interactions at the event, the actor was asked to describe several prominent Indian cricketers in a few words.

In his responses, Ram Charan described Sachin Tendulkar as having a “long legendary journey”, portrayed MS Dhoni as “calm and composed”, and referred to Virat Kohli as “fire”. He further characterised Rohit Sharma as “everyone’s favourite person”.

However, when speaking about Jasprit Bumrah, he mistakenly identified him as a footballer instead of a cricketer. The comment was captured on video and rapidly circulated on social media platforms, where it attracted widespread attention and prompted a wave of reactions and meme content from users.

Following the public circulation of the clip, Ram Charan issued a clarification and apology via his account on X (formerly Twitter). In his statement, he attributed the error to momentary confusion during a high-pressure public interaction and apologised directly to Bumrah.

He stated: “Uff… sometimes I do forget names. I sincerely apologise to Jasprit Bumrah for this mistake—this was completely a human error amid all the excitement and crowd.”

He further added that he holds great respect for the Indian fast bowler and is an admirer of his performances on the field.

The episode has also drawn attention amid Bumrah’s ongoing challenges on the field. The pacer has been managing a lingering injury sustained during the T20 World Cup earlier in the year, which has continued to affect his performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League season for Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians’ head coach Mahela Jayawardene has noted that despite giving Bumrah adequate rest, the fast bowler has struggled to regain his usual sharpness and impact with the ball.

In the current season, Bumrah has played 13 matches for Mumbai Indians and has taken only four wickets, a return that falls significantly short of his established standards.

The cricketers mentioned during the interaction and Ram Charan’s descriptions are summarised below:

CricketerDescription given by Ram Charan
Sachin TendulkarLong legendary journey
MS DhoniCalm and composed
Virat KohliFire
Rohit SharmaEveryone’s favourite person

The incident has remained a talking point due to the on-camera nature of the error and the swift public response that followed, including Ram Charan’s clarification and apology on social media.
