The league stage of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) has concluded, confirming the four teams that will compete in the play-offs after a closely contested campaign. Rajasthan Royals secured the final qualifying position on the last day of the league phase, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru finished at the top of the table.
At the end of the league stage, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad all finished on 18 points. However, Bengaluru secured first place because of a superior net run rate. Their consistency throughout the tournament ensured that they remained ahead of the other sides despite the points tie.
Rajasthan Royals qualified as the fourth team with 16 points. Punjab Kings narrowly missed out on a play-off berth after finishing the campaign with 15 points.
The play-off schedule has also been finalised. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans will meet in the first qualifier on 26 May. The winner of that match will progress directly to the IPL final. The losing side will receive another opportunity to reach the final through the second qualifier.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals will contest the other play-off fixture, which effectively serves as an eliminator. The losing side in that match will be knocked out of the tournament, while the winning team will remain in contention for a place in the final.
Sunrisers Hyderabad emerged as one of the most notable performers during the league phase. The side produced consistent batting displays and maintained momentum across the tournament to secure qualification comfortably. Their top-order performances and ability to post competitive totals played an important role in their progress to the final four.
In contrast, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, two of the league’s most established franchises, failed to meet expectations this season. Both teams struggled to maintain consistency during the league phase and were unable to secure sufficient points to remain in contention for the play-offs.
The IPL play-off system rewards the teams finishing in the top two positions by giving them two opportunities to reach the final. The third and fourth-placed teams face immediate elimination if they lose their first play-off match. As a result, Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans enter the next stage with a significant advantage.
Below is the final league-stage standing of the qualifying teams and Punjab Kings:
| Team | Points | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Challengers Bengaluru | 18 | 1st |
| Gujarat Titans | 18 | 2nd |
| Sunrisers Hyderabad | 18 | 3rd |
| Rajasthan Royals | 16 | 4th |
| Punjab Kings | 15 | Eliminated |
With the league phase complete, attention now turns to the knockout stage of the competition. Four teams remain in contention for the 2026 IPL title, and the upcoming matches will determine which sides advance to the final of this year’s tournament.
