After months of speculation, Nazmul Hossain Shanto has been reinstated as Bangladesh’s Test captain, just four months after stepping down from the position. His comeback, ahead of the Sylhet Test against Ireland, demonstrates a renewed sense of responsibility and a focus on the national side’s long-term interests.
Shanto’s resignation in June followed the Sri Lanka series, during which he also relinquished his ODI captaincy after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided on leadership changes. With no Test matches played since, Bangladesh had not appointed a new skipper — leaving Shanto’s return a strategic decision rather than a reactive one.
Speaking to the press, Shanto said, “During my time away from the captaincy, I took the opportunity to reflect. I enjoyed the period, but through discussions with the board, it became clear that the Bangladesh team is far bigger than me. The national team’s needs must come first, above personal considerations.”
He added that guidance from senior BCB officials and former players was instrumental in shaping his decision. “The advice I received was always focused on improving the team and my personal development as a leader. I took those discussions seriously and realised that putting the team first was the right choice.”
Shanto previously expressed concern about multiple captains leading different formats — a situation with Mehidy Hasan Miraz in ODIs and Litton Kumar Das in T20Is. He now believes potential conflicts have been addressed. “We are very clear on potential issues and how to resolve them. I am confident that it will not create any challenges moving forward,” Shanto explained.
The captain also emphasised his cooperative relationship with his fellow captains. “My understanding with the other two captains is excellent. We have discussed how to progress the team, identify weaknesses, and strengthen performance. Communication with the board has been outstanding, and they have pledged full support if challenges arise.”
As Shanto prepares to lead Bangladesh against Ireland, his return embodies both responsibility and commitment. He reiterated, “Bangladesh cricket is bigger than any individual. My role is to serve the team and put its interests above everything else.”
The upcoming series offers Shanto an opportunity to reinforce his leadership credentials and inspire a side seeking consistency in the longer format.
