Nahid Rana Penalised After Throwing Ball at Irish Batsman in Sylhet Test

Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana has been officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an incident in which he threw the ball at Ireland’s debutant Kadeer Carmichael during the first day of the Sylhet Test. Rana admitted to the offence, resulting in a 25% fine of his match fee and the assignment of one demerit point on his disciplinary record.

The ICC confirmed that Rana breached the Level-1 Code of Conduct, which explicitly forbids players from hurling the ball or any piece of equipment dangerously towards an opponent during play. Typically, a Level-1 breach carries a 50% match fee fine and two demerit points, but Rana’s early admission and cooperation with match officials contributed to the reduced penalty.

The incident occurred during the 27th over of Ireland’s first innings. After fielding the ball, Rana unnecessarily threw it towards Carmichael, striking the batsman’s pad. Fortunately, Carmichael was well within the crease, and no injury resulted. Nevertheless, the act was deemed reckless and contrary to the spirit of fair play.

Match officials immediately noted the behaviour. Umpires Sam Nogajski and Ehsan Raja, together with TV umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Tanveer Ahmed, reported the incident to Match Referee Andy Pycroft, who oversaw the disciplinary proceedings. Following a review, the ICC concluded that Rana’s actions warranted formal sanctioning to maintain the integrity of the game.

The disciplinary action serves as a reminder that even inadvertent acts of dangerous play are taken seriously at the international level. Cricketing authorities emphasise that the safety of players remains paramount, and adherence to the Code of Conduct is essential to uphold the sport’s traditions.

Despite the incident, Bangladesh continued their strong performance. On the second day, before Rana could bowl again, Ireland’s innings concluded, leaving Bangladesh with 338/1 and a 52-run lead, signalling a positive start to their Test campaign.

The ICC reiterated that such sanctions are part of ongoing efforts to ensure players respect the game’s spirit while remaining accountable for actions on the field. Rana’s swift acknowledgment of the error demonstrates professional responsibility, though the incident has prompted discussions on discipline and safety in international cricket.
