Shariful Strikes Shake New Zealand Top Order

New Zealand encountered immediate difficulty in their chase of 103 runs from 90 deliveries, losing early wickets under sustained pressure from Bangladesh’s pace attack. Fast bowler Shariful Islam led the breakthrough, dismantling the top order with disciplined and effective bowling. He claimed three wickets for 19 runs in his three overs, reducing New Zealand to 25 for 3 within the early stages of the innings.

The situation worsened for the visitors when Mehedi Hasan dismissed Nick Kelly as the fourth batter, leaving New Zealand at 33 for 4. Despite the modest target, the early collapse placed significant pressure on the chasing side.

Earlier, Bangladesh suffered a pronounced batting collapse in the rain-affected third and final T20I of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The hosts were bowled out for 102 runs in 14.2 overs, failing to utilise even the reduced allocation of 15 overs.

The match carried decisive importance for both teams. Bangladesh had secured victory in the first match to take a 1–0 lead in the series, while the second match was abandoned due to rain. Consequently, a win in this fixture would ensure a series victory for Bangladesh, whereas New Zealand required a win to level the series 1–1.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Bangladesh began with some early momentum. Opener Saif Hasan attempted an aggressive start, helping the team reach 17 runs without loss in the first two overs. He scored 16 runs from 10 deliveries before being dismissed in the fourth over. Attempting to advance down the pitch, he mistimed his shot, resulting in Bangladesh losing their first wicket at 21.

The innings quickly deteriorated thereafter. Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Parvez Hossain Emon were both dismissed with the team score at 35, leaving Bangladesh at 35 for 3. Captain Liton Das attempted to stabilise the innings and accelerate the scoring, contributing 23 runs from 17 balls. However, his dismissal further compounded the pressure.

The middle and lower order failed to build partnerships, leading to a steady fall of wickets. Towhid Hridoy emerged as the top scorer for Bangladesh, making 33 runs from 24 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes. Apart from him, no other batter was able to make a substantial contribution, with eight players failing to reach double figures.

Although the match was shortened due to rain, Bangladesh were unable to bat through the allocated overs, being dismissed well before the limit.
