Fatima Sana’s 90 Goes in Vain as South Africa Clinch Thrilling Victory

In a pulsating first T20 International at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, Pakistan’s Fatima Sana produced a career-best 90, only for South Africa to clinch a thrilling five-wicket victory. The hosts’ collective batting, spearheaded by captain Laura Wolvaardt’s half-century, proved decisive in a match that swung dramatically in both directions.

Pakistan looked in serious trouble early, collapsing to 64 for 6. Enter Fatima Sana, who launched a spectacular counterattack, scoring 90 from just 41 deliveries. Her innings featured seven sixes and nine fours, lifting Pakistan to a competitive total of 180 for 9. Sana’s resilience was supported by late contributions from Natalia Pervaiz, who added 20 runs, but it was her individual brilliance that kept Pakistan in the contest.

South Africa’s response was powered by Wolvaardt, who struck 61 off 38 balls, complemented by Sune Luus’s 32 off 20 and Kayla Reyneke’s unbeaten 29 from 16. The chase extended to the final ball, with Reyneke sealing victory in style with a six when only two were required.

Reyneke also starred with the ball, claiming 2 for 13 in her four overs, including a maiden, removing Gull Feroza and Natalia Pervaiz. Ayanda Hlubi (3-41) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (2 wickets) made early inroads, keeping Pakistan under pressure during the first half of their innings.

Sana had arrived at the crease in the 10th over, following the fall of the sixth wicket, and immediately took the attack to the South African bowlers. Big overs from Mlaba (16th over, 19 runs), Hlubi (17th over, 21 runs), and Ayabonga Khaka (final over, 19 runs) allowed Pakistan to post a total that was defendable, if not match-winning.

South Africa’s chase began confidently, with Tazmin Brits striking boundaries before being dismissed by Humna Bilal in the fourth over. Wolvaardt and Luus then forged a rapid 62-run partnership, propelling the innings to 102 for 2 after 10 overs. Wolvaardt reached her fifty in 31 balls, but Pakistan fought back with Sandhu claiming key wickets, briefly slowing the chase. At the end of the 17th over, South Africa were 153 for 5, needing 28 runs from 18 balls.

Reyneke’s calm finishing, including a decisive last-ball six, ensured South Africa crossed the line at 185 for 5.
