India’s preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup have been hit by a fresh wave of concern as doubts loom over the availability of opener Abhishek Sharma for their second match. India is set to face Namibia on 12 February at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, but Sharma’s participation remains uncertain after he missed the team’s first practice session on Tuesday.
According to reports, Sharma has been admitted to hospital due to a severe abdominal infection. The severity of his condition has cast a shadow over India’s plans, with the likelihood of him featuring against Namibia now considered low.
Sharma’s troubles are not new. He had fallen ill ahead of India’s opening match against the United States, and his performance was affected. In that game, he was dismissed for a duck and did not appear in the second innings, being replaced as a substitute fielder by Sanju Samson. Even at the post-match celebrations, Sharma’s absence was noticeable.
During India’s match at the Wankhede Stadium, Sharma reportedly suffered from fever and was administered saline to stabilise his condition. Initially, the team management described the issue as a minor stomach upset. However, subsequent reports indicate that the infection is more serious than first suggested, reducing his chances of playing in the upcoming fixture.
Assistant coach Ryan Ten Descat stated, “Abhishek’s abdominal issue has not fully resolved yet. We are hopeful he will be fit to play within the next two days.”
Despite his illness, Sharma travelled with the team to Delhi. However, over the past 24 hours, his physical condition has reportedly deteriorated further. He was seen at a special team dinner hosted by head coach Gautam Gambhir on 8 February, yet concerns over his fitness remain unresolved.
With Sharma absent from Tuesday’s practice, Sanju Samson led the nets session. Reports indicate that Samson, who struggled for form in the recent New Zealand series, appeared uncomfortable against bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya, even receiving treatment for his left hand during practice.
Ryan Ten Descat added, “Our primary focus is on Abhishek’s fitness. The team combination will be finalised based on his availability.”
India’s final assessment of Sharma’s readiness is expected following Wednesday’s concluding practice session in Delhi, which will determine whether the opener can take the field against Namibia.
