The most important series for Pakistan’s World Cup campaign is against Australia

Pakistan are meticulously fine-tuning their preparations ahead of next month’s ICC T20 World Cup, despite lingering uncertainties surrounding their participation. The home series against Australia, starting later this month, is being viewed as a key opportunity to solidify the team’s strategy and form, according to experienced all-rounder Shadab Khan.

The three-match T20 series, scheduled at home, will take place on 29 January, 31 January, and 1 February. Shadab believes this series against one of the world’s strongest sides will serve as the ideal rehearsal for the upcoming World Cup, which begins on 7 February in India and Sri Lanka.

“Facing Australia is the best preparation for the World Cup. Our spinners performed well in the Asia Cup, and we hope they continue this form in the World Cup,” Shadab said during a practice session on Monday, which was modelled on match scenarios.

The leg-spin all-rounder also addressed ongoing scrutiny over his own performances, emphasising that he focuses on improvement rather than external criticism. “Praise follows good performances, and criticism follows poor ones. There is much talk about me, but I remain focused on my game,” he added.

Adapting to Sri Lankan conditions is another focal point for Pakistan. Shadab highlighted the importance of flexibility in modern cricket, noting that pitch conditions can change rapidly. “In Sri Lanka, the conditions shift quickly. Our aim is to play positive cricket wherever we go,” he explained.

He further clarified his role as an all-rounder amid speculation that he is concentrating more on batting. “I am primarily a bowler who can contribute with the bat. I strive to balance both aspects equally,” Shadab stated.

Australia is set to arrive in Lahore on 28 January to begin the series. Following these fixtures, Pakistan is expected to tour Sri Lanka ahead of the World Cup, although final participation is contingent on government approval.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Khan, confirmed that a definitive decision regarding the team’s World Cup involvement will be taken next week. Meanwhile, the squad remains committed to intensive preparation, using the Australia series as a critical testing ground for strategies, team combinations, and player form.
