As the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 approaches, Dhaka Capitals have already begun their preparations. While the team boasts an experienced foreign head coach in Toby Radford, the remainder of the coaching staff is entirely local.
Speaking at a recent press conference, assistant coach Mahbub Ali Jacky explained that the team relies predominantly on its homegrown coaching personnel. “Toby Radford is our sole foreign coach,” Jacky said. “We may occasionally have foreign specialists as analysts, but the backbone of the team—physios, trainers and daily coaching staff—is local.”
He continued, “Our physios and trainers are most familiar with the players’ physical conditions, fitness levels and recovery needs, which makes their role absolutely vital. Additionally, our local staff have extensive experience working with international-standard players, which is why the franchise has placed such trust in them. This also provides valuable opportunities for our homegrown coaches to develop on an international scale.”
Jacky further elaborated on the strategic approach of the Capitals. “We prepare multiple game plans depending on the match situation. The coaching staff and the captain work closely together to decide which plan to implement against each opponent. Typically, we have two to three game plans per opponent. During a match, players’ positions and roles are adjusted in real-time to maximise performance.”
In essence, the team’s approach balances international expertise with local knowledge, allowing the Capitals to remain competitive while fostering domestic talent.
The table below summarises the coaching structure and responsibilities within Dhaka Capitals:
| Staff Role | Nationality | Responsibilities |
|---|---|---|
| Toby Radford | Foreign (UK) | Head coach, overall strategy and technical direction |
| Mahbub Ali Jacky | Local | Assistant coach, game plans, tactical decisions |
| Physio Team | Local | Player fitness, injury prevention, rehabilitation |
| Trainers | Local | Daily practice, strength & conditioning, performance development |
| Analysts (occasional) | Foreign | Opposition analysis, match insights |
This strategy not only strengthens the Capitals’ team performance but also nurtures local coaching talent, offering them hands-on experience at an international level. By relying on local coaches for the core support roles, Dhaka Capitals are setting an example of how domestic expertise can complement global knowledge.
While a foreign head coach brings international insight, it is the local coaching staff who form the backbone of the team, ensuring players are physically prepared, tactically aware, and strategically adaptable throughout the tournament.
