The ongoing Asia Cup 2025 has once again seen tensions flare between the cricket boards of India and Pakistan. During the tournament, the Indian players refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts in their match, and the incident where the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, was not allowed to present the trophy further ignited widespread criticism.
As of now, the Asia Cup trophy has not been officially handed over to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), creating a new wave of controversy in the cricketing world. Analysts have raised concerns that if this situation continues, it could jeopardise not only bilateral series but also the possibility of the two teams facing off in future ICC tournaments.
Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler, Wasim Akram, has voiced his opinion on the matter, stating, “Politics should never be involved in cricket. Sport must remain separate from politics. Every player, from every country, should have an equal opportunity in league cricket.”
He went on to stress the importance of displaying a magnanimous attitude. Otherwise, he warned, the moral standards of cricket would be compromised. In this context, he urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the respective cricket boards to play a pivotal role in resolving the issue.
According to news agency IANS, discussions on this topic may take place at the ongoing ICC quarterly meeting in Dubai. The BCCI has already addressed the issue formally and informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in writing.
BCCI Secretary, Devajit Saikia, confirmed that the delay in the trophy handover would be discussed, and the matter had been officially communicated to the ACC.
Analysts in the cricketing fraternity have expressed concern that such behaviour is undermining the core ethos of the sport, “the spirit of the game.” While international cricket has traditionally been seen as a symbol of friendly rivalry, recent events, especially the India-Pakistan matches, have painted a different picture.
