The BCB could have been more alert and tactful

Bangladesh will not be participating in the upcoming T20 World Cup, a decision that has sparked both relief and regret among former national football captain Aminul Haque. Speaking at an event yesterday, Aminul praised the emphasis on the players’ safety and national honour but criticised the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for failing to explore diplomatic avenues that might have allowed the team to compete.

“Matters surrounding Mustafizur Rahman could have been addressed through dialogue with the Indian Cricket Board or the IPL authorities,” Aminul stated. “Had such discussions taken place, Bangladesh might have avoided the circumstances that forced them to skip the World Cup. From that perspective, the cricket board has shown a lack of strategic foresight.”

Aminul emphasised that national security and dignity should always come first. “We support any measure that ensures the safety of Bangladeshis abroad and preserves our country’s honour,” he said. “Yet cricket is deeply intertwined with our national pride. On the international stage, our participation reflects Bangladesh’s standing. The board could, and should, have been more tactful in handling this situation.”

He further elaborated on potential avenues for resolution: “We could have negotiated directly with the Indian Cricket Board and the ICC to find a solution. Instead, decisions were made internally, without seeking external input. Had there been sustained engagement with the ICC, there may well have been a path forward. Our players naturally deserve to play on the field, and Bangladesh has a long-standing presence in World Cups. It’s important to examine whose oversight prevented this participation and whether opportunities to resolve it were missed.”

Meanwhile, the BCB has initiated efforts to reinstate cricketing legend Shakib Al Hasan into the national team. Aminul welcomed the move but stressed compliance with legal procedures: “We certainly want a player of Shakib’s calibre back, but the process must respect the state and follow proper protocols. The board cannot act unilaterally.”

Aminul also criticised former youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiyan, attributing part of the BCB’s setbacks to his inexperience. “The adviser could have avoided directly undermining the board. His inexperience has caused significant damage to both our cricket administration and the sport itself. The current president is now constrained by those prior missteps,” he noted.
