Simmons Unfazed by BCB Leadership Changes

Phil Simmons has stated that the recent sequence of leadership changes within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not surprised him, citing his long professional experience. The 63-year-old head coach of the Bangladesh national team made the remarks during a press conference in Mirpur ahead of the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand.

Simmons assumed the role of Bangladesh head coach in May 2024, at a time when Faruque Ahmed was serving as BCB president. Within approximately two weeks of Simmons’ arrival in Bangladesh, a leadership transition took place on 16 May, with Aminul Islam replacing Faruque Ahmed as president. Aminul remained in the position for around ten months before the National Sports Council dissolved his committee on 7 April. Subsequently, Tamim Iqbal was appointed as the chairman of an ad hoc committee overseeing the board.

When asked whether such rapid administrative changes had taken him by surprise, Simmons responded with a smile, stating, “Nothing surprises me anymore in life. It has nothing to do with Bangladesh; it is my general outlook on life. I have been through so many ups and downs that I understand how much can happen in a single day, so I am no longer surprised by anything.”

He further clarified that the changes in BCB leadership have had no impact on his responsibilities or the team’s preparation. According to Simmons, the coaching group has continued its work without disruption, maintaining the same standards and routines in preparing for international series. He emphasised that the process of team preparation remained consistent regardless of administrative developments.

The events of 7 April marked a particularly notable moment in the recent developments. Aminul Islam was still serving as BCB president in the morning, but by the afternoon, the leadership had changed, with Tamim Iqbal assuming charge of the ad hoc committee. During this period, allegations and counter-allegations emerged within the board’s administrative framework. However, the national squad remained engaged in their preparation camp for the New Zealand series.

Simmons indicated that he had not observed any adverse effect of these developments on the players. He stated that training sessions proceeded as planned and that the players maintained their usual level of commitment. In some cases, he noted, individuals had worked even harder than usual. He added that all necessary preparations for the series were being carried out as scheduled. On the question of any psychological impact on players, Simmons suggested that such assessments would be better addressed by the players themselves, while reiterating that he had not personally noticed any issues.

During the press conference, initial questions were focused on the administrative changes within the board. At one point, Simmons redirected the discussion, stating, “Let us return to cricket matters.”
