Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has strengthened his influence well beyond the film industry by achieving another significant milestone in international cricket. The Knight Riders Group, in which he is a principal owner, has inaugurated a purpose-built international-standard cricket stadium in the United States, marking the first time the organisation has developed and will operate a dedicated cricket venue outside its home markets. The project represents a major step in the group’s long-term strategy to expand the global footprint of the sport.
The newly completed stadium is located within the Fairplex complex in Pomona, California. It will serve as the home ground of the Los Angeles Knight Riders, the franchise competing in Major League Cricket, while also being available to host a range of domestic and international cricket events in the years ahead. The venue is expected to contribute to the continued growth of cricket infrastructure in the United States as interest in the game steadily increases.
Shah Rukh Khan officially inaugurated the stadium through a video message released on 1 July. Reflecting on the achievement, he described the opening as the fulfilment of a vision that had once existed only as an ambitious idea. He said bringing one of the world’s most popular sports to a global city such as Los Angeles in a meaningful and lasting way represented a historic accomplishment for everyone involved.
He added that the long-term partnership between Fairplex and the Knight Riders Group extends beyond the construction of a sporting venue. The wider ambition, he explained, is to establish a vibrant community destination where cricket, entertainment and social interaction come together. The facility has been designed not only for players and supporters but also for families, friends and local residents, creating a space where the sport can foster connection, enjoyment and community spirit.
According to Shah Rukh Khan, the stadium has the potential to become a permanent home for cricket in the Los Angeles area. He also expressed confidence that the venue would inspire a new generation of players and supporters, encouraging broader participation and helping the sport reach audiences that have traditionally had limited exposure to cricket.
The stadium has been constructed to meet international standards. Its central square features eight high-quality cricket pitches prepared for competitive play. The field dimensions have been designed in accordance with recognised international specifications, ensuring the venue is capable of hosting top-level matches.
To support day-night fixtures, the ground has been equipped with six floodlight towers standing 120 feet high, providing the illumination required for professional competition. The scale of the construction project was equally notable, with more than 32,000 metric tonnes of earth removed during site preparation, highlighting the engineering complexity involved in transforming the location into a modern cricket venue.
Knight Riders Sports Chief Executive Officer Venky Mysore described the project as far more than the construction of another stadium. In his view, it reflects the organisation’s long-term commitment to the future of cricket and its ambition to strengthen its position as a truly global cricket brand. He said establishing an international-standard home venue demonstrates the group’s continued investment in expanding the game’s reach and setting new benchmarks for franchise cricket worldwide.
Cricket has gained increasing momentum in the United States in recent years, driven by growing interest among expatriate communities as well as a gradual rise in local participation and viewership. The launch of Major League Cricket has further accelerated investment in facilities and professional competition, creating new opportunities for the sport to establish a stronger presence in one of the world’s largest sporting markets.
Against this backdrop, the opening of the Pomona stadium is widely regarded as an important addition to American cricket infrastructure.
