In a dramatic development ahead of IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings have confirmed that Sanju Samson will not be taking over as captain, despite joining the franchise from Rajasthan Royals. The announcement confirms that Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue in the role, maintaining leadership continuity despite recent underwhelming performances.
Samson’s arrival had initially fuelled speculation about a leadership change, especially following the departures of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran during the trading window. His extensive captaincy experience with Rajasthan, where he led the team through multiple successful campaigns, made him a natural candidate to lead CSK. However, management appears to be prioritising stability and continuity over a leadership shake-up, signalling faith in Gaikwad to spearhead the franchise’s resurgence.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s tenure as captain has been closely scrutinised. After Dhoni retired from captaincy in 2024, Gaikwad inherited the role but struggled to replicate the consistency of the legendary leader. CSK’s performance under him saw a decline, with the team finishing fifth in his first season and bottom of the table in 2025. Gaikwad also missed key fixtures due to injury, with Dhoni stepping back temporarily to provide guidance during critical matches.
Samson’s focus is now expected to be on contributing heavily as a top-order batter, strengthening a line-up that will have several new faces post-auction. CSK have also released key players, including Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Matheesha Pathirana, clearing the way for a strategic rebuild ahead of the mini-auction. With a purse of ₹43.40 crore, the franchise can acquire up to eight new players, including four overseas recruits, giving them ample scope to revamp their squad.
The mini-auction, set for 16 December at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, will be pivotal for Chennai. The team management is under pressure to assemble a winning combination capable of reclaiming the IPL crown they last won in 2023. Samson, though not wearing the captain’s armband, brings his explosive batting, leadership experience, and cricketing acumen to the table, ensuring he remains an influential figure within the squad.
As fans debate the decision, the key question is whether the franchise can balance experience and fresh talent while navigating a competitive auction. With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading and Sanju Samson in a supporting role, CSK is banking on stability and calculated aggression to bounce back in IPL 2026.
