Lahore: Fans at the Gaddafi Stadium were eagerly anticipating the unveiling of Pakistan’s new T20 World Cup jersey following the toss of today’s Pakistan–Australia match. According to Pakistani media reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had planned a formal launch of the team’s official kit, but the event did not take place as scheduled.
Geo News reported that the PCB has postponed the jersey unveiling ceremony. The reason for this decision remains unclear, though a PCB source cited “unavoidable circumstances” as the cause. The timing of the jersey launch has drawn attention amid discussions over Pakistan potentially boycotting the World Cup in protest of what it describes as the ICC’s double standards.
The source told Geo News that the jersey launch was intended to follow the toss of the second T20 of the Pakistan–Australia series. However, the ceremony was deferred due to the cited unavoidable circumstances. In recent years, venue changes for India–Pakistan matches have been made citing security concerns. PCB officials have criticised the ICC for adopting a different stance regarding Bangladesh’s participation in this T20 World Cup, citing inconsistent policy enforcement.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the board is reviewing Pakistan’s participation in the tournament. A final decision regarding the team’s involvement is expected on Monday.
According to the schedule, Pakistan will kick off its World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on 7 February. The team is placed in Group A, alongside arch-rivals India, the United States, and Namibia. All matches will be held in Colombo. Pakistan’s selectors announced a 15-member squad on 25 January, but questions remain over whether the team will play. Selector Aaqib Javed stated: “It is our responsibility to select the squad; whether the team plays is a decision for the board.”
Below is a summary of Pakistan’s Group A opponents and fixtures:
| Team | Group | First Match | Venue | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pakistan | A | vs Netherlands | Colombo | Squad announced, participation unconfirmed |
| India | A | – | Colombo | Arch-rival of Pakistan |
| USA | A | – | Colombo | Emerging competitive team |
| Namibia | A | – | Colombo | Newcomer in the tournament |
Meanwhile, Bangladesh will not be participating in the World Cup due to government security concerns. Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested that the matches be moved to Sri Lanka, the ICC rejected the proposal and instead replaced Bangladesh with Scotland.
The postponement of Pakistan’s jersey launch has added to growing uncertainty around the T20 World Cup. Analysts note that security concerns and inconsistencies in ICC policies may continue to influence team participation and tournament arrangements.
