Bangladesh have received encouraging news regarding fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the second One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand national cricket team. The left-arm pacer had missed the opening match of the three-match series due to injury, raising concerns about his availability for the remainder of the contest.
Prior to the start of the series, Bangladesh suffered a setback when Mustafizur was ruled out of the first ODI. Uncertainty persisted over whether he would be fit in time for the second match. However, teammate Shoriful Islam provided a positive update during a press conference, stating, “Yes, he (Mustafizur) is, Alhamdulillah, mostly fine.”
Mustafizur had initially been included in the playing XI for the first ODI, and his name had even been finalised before the match. However, during the warm-up session, he experienced discomfort in his right knee. Upon learning of the issue, head coach Phil Simmons informed the captain, leading to a last-minute decision to withdraw the bowler from the match in order to avoid further risk.
According to the latest update, there is no restriction preventing Mustafizur from featuring in the second ODI. His recovery has progressed sufficiently for him to be considered for selection. Shoriful Islam also emphasised that all members of the 15-player squad remain prepared to take part, depending on the team management’s final decision. He stated, “All 15 of us in the squad stay ready to play. Whoever the coach selects will take the field; that is not in my hands.”
Bangladesh currently trail 1–0 in the series after New Zealand secured victory in the opening match. As a result, the second ODI has become crucial for the hosts. A defeat would result in Bangladesh conceding the series with one match still remaining. The team, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, must therefore secure a win to keep the series alive.
The second ODI is scheduled to take place on 20 April at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The outcome of this match will determine whether Bangladesh can force a decider or concede the series early.
