The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the details of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction. The much-anticipated mini auction will take place on 16 December 2025, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
This marks the third consecutive year that the IPL auction will be held outside India — a growing trend that’s sparking much debate among cricket fans and analysts alike.
In 2024, the auction was hosted in Dubai, while the 2025 mega auction took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Now, Abu Dhabi becomes the third foreign city to stage this marquee event.

Why the Auction Is Being Held Overseas
According to the BCCI, the decision to host the auction abroad stems primarily from logistical challenges in India during December, which coincides with the wedding season. Major Indian cities face a shortage of hotel availability at that time, prompting organisers to shift the event overseas.
Additionally, the Ashes Series is set to commence on 17 December 2025, and the BCCI wants to complete the auction beforehand to align with broadcasters’ schedules and ensure maximum global coverage.
Major Surprises in the Trading Window
The trading window has already created a storm of headlines, with several unexpected transfers between franchises.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made a stunning move by signing Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals, while Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran head the other way.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have strengthened their squad, acquiring Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants for ₹2 crore, and Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans for ₹2.6 crore.
In another notable deal, Lucknow Super Giants have brought in Arjun Tendulkar from Mumbai Indians for ₹30 lakh.
With teams reshaping their squads and new strategies brewing, the 2026 IPL mini auction promises to be one of the most thrilling yet.
