Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has not featured in the national side since the Champions Trophy, and his continued absence has raised several questions. Even during the recent white-ball series against Australia, Shami was left out of the squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that Shami’s exclusion was due to fitness concerns, adding that the selectors were in regular contact with him. However, conflicting claims from both parties have added to the uncertainty surrounding his situation.
In this difficult phase, Shami has found strong support from former Indian captain and current Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly believes Shami is fully fit and ready to make his return to international cricket.
Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Ganguly praised the veteran pacer’s recent domestic performances, saying:
“Shami has been outstanding. In two or three Ranji matches, he almost single-handedly won games for Bengal. I’m sure the selectors are watching him closely. In terms of fitness and skill, Shami remains the same world-class bowler. In my opinion, there is absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t be playing for India in Tests, ODIs, or T20s.”
Shami himself has insisted that he is completely fit and waiting for an opportunity to don the Indian jersey again. Despite that, he was not considered for the recent Test series against the West Indies or the tour of Australia.
In the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, Shami has been in impressive form, delivering long spells and consistently picking up wickets. Over the first three matches, he has bowled 93 overs, taking 15 wickets at an average of 15.13, with best figures of 5 for 38 — clear evidence of both form and fitness. Although he took a rest during the fourth round, his performances have kept his name in contention.
| Performance Summary (Ranji Trophy 2025 Season) | Statistics |
|---|---|
| Matches Played | 3 |
| Overs Bowled | 93 |
| Wickets Taken | 15 |
| Bowling Average | 15.13 |
| Best Bowling Figures | 5/38 |
Shami’s last appearance in a Test match came during the 2023 World Test Championship Final. With the Indian management currently focusing on nurturing young fast bowlers, his international future appears uncertain.
However, Ganguly remains confident that experience and skill like Shami’s cannot be easily replaced.
“Players like Shami don’t come around often,” Ganguly added. “He still has plenty to offer Indian cricket, both as a strike bowler and as a mentor for the next generation.”
Shami’s proven track record, coupled with Ganguly’s public backing, may well push the selectors to reconsider his inclusion in the upcoming series — a comeback that could further strengthen India’s pace attack.
