The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to revert to its traditional player draft mechanism for the upcoming edition, abandoning the auction system utilised in the previous two iterations. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the governing body of the sport in the island nation, has confirmed that the player draft will officially take place on 1 June 2026. This shift back to the draft framework marks a major structural change for the tournament, introducing a complete reshuffle of franchise rosters without player retentions.
Interest in the franchise-based Twenty20 tournament has seen a significant surge globally. According to official data disclosed by Sri Lanka Cricket, more than 650 cricketers hailing from 21 different nations have submitted their registrations to participate in the selection process.
Among the global pool of applicants, forty-eight Bangladeshi cricketers have formally registered their names for the draft. However, Sri Lanka Cricket has not yet made the comprehensive list public, leaving the exact identities of these registered Bangladeshi players undisclosed for the time being.
Distribution of Overseas Registrations
Geographically, Pakistan leads the registration charts by a considerable margin, with 102 Pakistani players applying to be part of the draft. The international applicant pool also features substantial representation from several other major cricketing nations, including 75 players from the West Indies, 66 from South Africa, 41 from New Zealand, 24 from Australia, 15 from England, and 12 from India.
The tournament has drawn attention beyond the traditional Test-playing nations as well, attracting notable entries from various associate member countries of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Cricketers from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States of America (USA), and Ireland have registered their availability, reflecting the expanding footprint of the league. Following the completion of the initial registration phase, a meticulous verification and vetting process will be executed by the authorities to trim the expansive list. Consequently, a total of 310 cricketers will be shortlisted to form the final draft pool.
Tournament Itinerary and Schedule
The upcoming edition of the tournament is officially scheduled to commence on 17 July 2026. The opening fixture of the season will feature an immediate rematch of the previous final, as the reigning champions, Jaffna, face the runners-up, Galle. If the tournament progresses precisely in accordance with the established logistical itinerary, the final showpiece match will be played on 8 August 2026. To mitigate the risk of adverse weather conditions or any unforeseen interruptions during the business end of the tournament, Sri Lanka Cricket has officially designated 9 August 2026 as a dedicated reserve day for the final.
