BCB’s Mini Model Starts Journey in Sylhet

Bangladesh cricket has taken a significant step towards decentralisation with the formal launch of what is being described as the country’s first “Mini BCB”. On Wednesday afternoon, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) inaugurated its new regional office in Sylhet, marking the board’s first permanent operational presence outside Dhaka.

The opening of the Sylhet office has long been anticipated as part of a broader vision to spread cricket administration and development more evenly across the country. However, despite the excitement surrounding the initiative, the long-envisioned fully autonomous regional cricket authority will not be established immediately. For the time being, the Sylhet office will operate under the direct supervision of a BCB-appointed official holding the title of “Head of Cricket”.

BCB Media Committee Chairman Amjad Hossain explained that the initiative forms a key component of the board president’s ambitious “Triple Century Project”, a long-term plan aimed at transforming cricket infrastructure, governance, and talent development nationwide.

“Our objective is to take cricket to every corner of the country,” Amjad said. “That cannot be achieved if all administrative operations remain confined to Dhaka. Establishing regional offices is essential, and Sylhet is where this journey begins.”

Once fully operational, the Sylhet office will oversee cricket development across the division’s four districts—Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sunamganj—as well as their respective upazilas. Its responsibilities will include organising local leagues, identifying emerging talent, coordinating age-group competitions, and seeking sponsorship to support grassroots programmes.

The office will also act as a bridge between local cricket bodies and the BCB’s headquarters, ensuring administrative support, logistical coordination, and technical guidance when required. Officials believe this structure will allow faster decision-making at the regional level while maintaining alignment with national cricket policies.

Amjad further revealed that the current arrangement is intended as a phased approach rather than a permanent solution. “Our long-term aim is to gradually build a self-sustaining structure here,” he said. “In time, Sylhet will have its own selection panel, dedicated coaching staff, training facilities, and administrative framework.”

Cricket analysts see the Sylhet initiative as a pilot project that could pave the way for similar regional offices in Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal. If successful, the model may fundamentally reshape how cricket is managed and developed in Bangladesh, creating a more inclusive and efficient pathway for talent from rural and semi-urban areas to reach the national stage.
