BCB Plans Domestic Series Amid World Cup Absence

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has revealed an ambitious contingency plan to revitalise the national sporting spirit following the country’s forced absence from the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Due to significant security concerns, Bangladesh declined to travel to the host nation, India. The situation was further compounded when the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected a formal proposal by the BCB to move Bangladesh’s fixtures to a neutral venue, leaving the national side with a vacant international calendar and the players facing substantial financial losses.

A New One-Day Format Tournament

To mitigate the lack of competitive action in February, the BCB, in consultation with the interim government, plans to launch a four-team One-Day (50-over) tournament. This competition is designed to feature current national stars alongside promising talent from the fringes of the squad.

Beyond keeping the players match-fit, the board has indicated that participants will receive generous financial compensation, helping to offset the earnings lost from missing the World Cup. The tournament is being viewed as a crucial developmental step, particularly as the national team prepares for a high-profile three-match ODI series against Pakistan scheduled for March.

Government Backing and Official Statements

The proposal gained significant momentum following a late-night meeting between the Sports Adviser, Professor Asif Nazrul, BCB President Aminul Islam, and other top-tier officials. Reports suggest the government is keen for a domestic showpiece to maintain public interest in cricket while the global tournament proceeds without Bangladesh.

Md. Mahbub-ul-Alam, Secretary of the National Sports Council, confirmed that an official announcement from the BCB is imminent. Meanwhile, Shahriar Nafees, Manager of Cricket Operations, noted that the finer details—including team compositions and match venues—will be finalised in the coming days once the Tournament Committee receives the final nod from the President.

Strategic Calendar Revisions

The introduction of this ODI tournament has necessitated a shift in the domestic first-class schedule. The Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), originally slated for February, has been pushed back.

By prioritising the white-ball format in February, the BCB aims to ensure the squad is adequately prepared for Pakistan’s arrival, while rescheduling the four-day red-ball matches to serve as a direct warm-up for the two Test matches scheduled for late May.
