BCB on the Path to New History

In a landmark move for Bangladeshi cricket, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to inaugurate its very first regional branch office, marking a historic step in decentralising cricket administration across the country. The initiative will officially commence in Sylhet, with the BCB office there expected to open tomorrow, according to an insider source from the board.

The launch of regional offices forms part of the BCB’s broader strategy to expand cricket’s reach beyond the capital, fostering development at the divisional level. Following Sylhet, similar offices are planned in Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna, and other divisions, creating a nationwide network to manage cricketing affairs more effectively.

Unlike previous structures that operated under the banner of local “associations,” these regional offices will carry the name of their respective divisions — for example, BCB Sylhet and BCB Chittagong. Each office will be headed by a regional chief, who will oversee all cricket operations, from grassroots development to administrative functions. These offices will feature dedicated staff structures and organograms, ensuring clear lines of authority and operational efficiency.

The BCB plans to appoint regional heads through a transparent recruitment process, advertising the positions in major media outlets to attract qualified and skilled candidates. This approach mirrors the governance models of established cricketing nations such as India, Australia, and England, where state and regional cricket associations play a pivotal role in nurturing talent and managing competitions.

This decentralisation is expected to significantly strengthen cricket administration outside Dhaka, providing local players, coaches, and officials with greater access to resources and support. The timing is especially notable as Sylhet is currently hosting the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), with all Chittagong matches temporarily relocated to the city. The inauguration of the regional office during the BPL further underscores BCB’s commitment to boosting cricket infrastructure at the divisional level.

BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul has emphasised the importance of regional cricket, stating that expanding administrative capacity outside Dhaka is a top priority for his tenure. Observers believe this initiative could mark the beginning of a new era in Bangladeshi cricket, fostering both talent development and organisational efficiency.
