The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is currently under the interim governance of an 11-member ad-hoc committee, with former national captain Tamim Iqbal serving as president. This transitional leadership structure is scheduled to conclude on 7 June, when the upcoming BCB elections will take place to establish a newly elected board of directors.
Institutional Stability and Public Ownership
Israfil Khosru, a member of the ad-hoc committee and the current head of the BCB finance committee, recently discussed the operational priorities of the board during an appearance on the BCB’s official Char-Chokka podcast. Khosru emphasised the critical need for long-term stability and policy continuity within the sports governing body.
He asserted that the primary mandate of the cricket board should remain straightforward: providing athletes with necessary facilities, maintaining robust infrastructure, and offering comprehensive institutional support. Khosru stated that if these core policies are maintained, the BCB will function transparently as an institution belonging to the general public, rather than serving the interests of any singular faction or group. He noted that cricket is inherently embedded within the national identity of Bangladesh.
Infrastructure Deficits and Competitive Pipelines
Khosru acknowledged that despite the lengthy history of Bangladesh cricket, domestic training facilities and infrastructures have not been adequately modernised. He argued that the board must address these systemic deficits to progress effectively.
| Identified Deficiency | Operational Requirement | Expected Outcome |
| Outdated Training Infrastructure | Modernisation of existing facilities | Enhanced player development and readiness |
| Absence of Dedicated Academies | Construction of new cricket academies | Structured transition from youth to senior levels |
| Infrequency of Regional Leagues | Consistent activation of divisional cricket | Continuous talent pipeline for the national team |
| Inadequate Ground Maintenance | Upgrading and expanding playing fields | Increased match volume across all tiers |
He highlighted that several regional leagues had remained inactive for multiple years. Khosru explained that without regular competitive matches and functional grounds at the divisional level, the sport cannot sustain a reliable pipeline of emerging talent. He concluded that ground development and match frequency are entirely interdependent.
Resolution of BPL Financial Arrears
Addressing financial mismanagement, Khosru revealed that the ad-hoc committee inherited substantial outstanding debts related to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) upon taking office. The interim board initiated direct administrative action to clear these financial arrears, ensuring that players received their long-overdue remuneration.
According to Khosru, prioritizing player compensation is essential, as the advancement of the sport is impossible without safeguarding the welfare of the athletes. He noted that guaranteed institutional backing and financial security directly increase player motivation. By removing external financial anxieties, athletes are enabled to focus exclusively on on-field performance. Khosru concluded that the board’s fundamental duty is to actively identify and resolve player grievances, ensuring that necessary resources are consistently provided.
