Bangladesh could not play in the World Cup; only the preparations were completed

As the T20 World Cup looms, Bangladesh finds itself in an unusual situation: while the nation’s cricketers have completed their domestic preparations, their participation in the global tournament remains in limbo.

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) this season was meticulously planned with the World Cup in mind. With no international fixtures clashing, players were expected to use the tournament as a platform to fine-tune their skills ahead of the main event. The final, scheduled for today, has allowed teams to complete that preparation—but its practical value is now under serious question.

Bangladesh’s decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup in India, citing security concerns, remains firm. Following a meeting on Thursday with sports advisor Asif Nazrul, players were once again reminded of the country’s official stance. Initially, plans had envisaged the team travelling to India two days after the BPL final, including participation in two preparatory matches ahead of the main tournament. However, the current reality ensures that Bangladesh will watch the World Cup from the sidelines.

The uncertainty surrounding the team’s participation has been echoed by Chattogram Royals captain and World Cup squad member Sheikh Mehedi Hasan, who said,

“Everyone focused on the final. Our concern is the final. The World Cup is not in our hands; it’s in management’s.”

Even the BPL’s ceremonial elements have reflected this uncertainty. Unlike previous editions, the trophy was not unveiled with the captains ahead of the final. After nearly a month of cricket, the trophy will only be presented today, two hours before the match begins at 6:00 PM.

On the field, performances have been a mixed bag. Early struggles in batting were evident across most squads, but players like Towhid Hridoy and Tanzid Hasan Tamim found rhythm in the latter stages of the tournament. Towhid ranks as the second-highest run-scorer with 382 runs, while Parvez Hossain Emon has led the tournament with consistent performances totalling 395 runs. Conversely, key batsmen Saif Hassan and Liton Das struggled for form throughout.

The bowling department, however, has demonstrated readiness. Shariful Islam led the charts with 24 wickets, while Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Sheikh Mehedi Hasan, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib contributed strongly. Yet, with the World Cup stage now beyond reach, the efficacy of these preparations remains uncertain.

While the BPL has provided players with invaluable match practice, Bangladesh’s absence from the T20 World Cup means that the ultimate test of their readiness remains off the field—and the team’s fans are left to hope that future tournaments can offer the stage they are currently denied.
