Uncertainty continues to surround Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, with the country making it clear that it will not accept any unreasonable conditions imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul emphasised that Bangladesh cannot be coerced into playing in India under undue pressure. He said, “No one can force us to play in India by creating unreasonable pressure. If the ICC tries to impose conditions on us by yielding to the Indian Board, we will not accept those conditions.”
Nazrul cited past ICC decisions as a reference point. “For example, when India refused to play in Pakistan, the ICC changed the venue. We have requested a venue change for entirely reasonable reasons. However, we cannot be forced to play in India under unjustified pressure,” he stated.
Earlier reports by the news agency AFP indicated that if Bangladesh were to withdraw from the T20 World Cup, Scotland would replace them. However, according to the BBC, the ICC has not engaged in any formal discussions with Cricket Scotland regarding this possibility.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to commence on 7 February 2026. Bangladesh had previously sent two letters to the ICC requesting that all their matches be relocated to Sri Lanka due to security concerns over playing in India. Although ICC officials met with representatives of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in Dhaka to discuss the issue, no resolution was reached.
While the ICC has yet to make an official announcement, cricket-focused platforms such as Cricinfo and various Indian news outlets reported on Monday that the ICC had given the BCB a deadline of Wednesday to confirm their participation. The BCB, however, firmly denied that any such deadline had been set.
