Ireland may not have always been synonymous with cricket, but one family has changed the perception of the sport in the country. The Joyce family is a shining example of how talent, passion, and perseverance can transform a household into a cricketing powerhouse. Remarkably, five of the nine Joyce siblings represented Ireland at the international level — a feat few families anywhere can match.
Ed, Dom, and Gus Joyce all represented Ireland in men’s cricket, with Ed also taking part in England’s national team. Meanwhile, twin sisters Isobel and Cecelia played pivotal roles in the Ireland women’s team, helping to elevate the women’s game in a country where cricket was once a niche pursuit.
Currently, Isobel Joyce is in Bangladesh, covering the Bangladesh–Ireland series as a commentator. Reflecting on her upbringing, she recalls a childhood immersed in cricket.
“In Ireland, cricket is often a family affair,” Isobel explains. “Families like ours, with multiple siblings playing at the top level, are rare. Having five of nine children represent Ireland is something that brings pride to all of us.”
Twins at the Heart of the Team
For Isobel, playing alongside her twin sister Cecelia remains one of the highlights of her career. The early days of Irish women’s cricket were challenging, often with losses outweighing wins. Yet, sharing those struggles with her sister made every tour and match more meaningful.
“Travelling abroad, people recognised us, but back home, hardly anyone knew we played cricket!” she laughs. “During a World Cup, I was asked to speak at a school assembly. Most of the children had never heard of cricket — it was humbling and funny at the same time.”
A Childhood Steeped in Cricket
The Joyce family’s cricketing journey began in their backyard, with siblings facing underarm throws and improvised games. Isobel recalls realising early on that a professional career in cricket for women was unlikely at the time.
“I was about 11 when I watched a Test match between England and another side,” she says. “I noticed there were no women playing, and I understood that pursuing cricket professionally might not be an option. That was disheartening, but it never stopped my love for the game.”
Despite the lack of professional opportunities, Isobel remained active in sports, coaching cricket and hockey. Today, she thrives as a commentator, still contributing to the game she fell in love with as a child.
Family, Cricket, and Conversation
While it might be expected that cricket dominates family discussions, Isobel admits that it is not quite that intense.
“Four of my siblings didn’t play cricket, but three follow it passionately. Only our eldest sister isn’t interested at all. Cricket is part of our lives, but not to the obsessive level outsiders imagine,” she explains.
Championing Women’s Cricket
Isobel has long been vocal about the need for financial and structural support for women’s cricket. She is heartened by recent growth in the sport, particularly the increasing global popularity of women’s tournaments.
“I always hoped India would win the Women’s World Cup,” she admits. “If they had in 2017, it could have dramatically accelerated the growth of the women’s game worldwide. The influence would have been enormous.”
