Pathan Criticises Body-Line Tactics Against Teenager Suryavanshi

Former Indian international pace bowler Irfan Pathan has expressed strong disapproval regarding the “body-line” bowling tactics deployed by bowlers to restrict Rajasthan Royals’ teenage opening batsman, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Despite facing short-pitched deliveries directed at his body by seasoned international fast bowlers, the 15-year-old continued his exceptional form during the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs, though his efforts were ultimately unable to prevent his team’s exit.

Aggressive Playoff Knocks Faced with Aggressive Tactics

During Qualifier 2 of the IPL playoffs, Suryavanshi delivered an impactful performance, scoring 96 runs off 47 deliveries against the Gujarat Titans. This followed a rapid innings in the preceding Eliminator match, where he compiled 97 runs from just 29 balls. In the course of his innings in Qualifier 2, the young left-hander took responsibility for the Rajasthan Royals’ innings amidst a top and middle-order batting collapse, lifting his side to a competitive total of 214 for 6.

However, during this knock, Suryavanshi was subjected to intense, short-pitched bowling targeting his body from international pacers Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj. In the 14th over, a bouncer from Rabada struck Suryavanshi’s helmet, necessitating a mandatory medical concussion test, before Siraj continued the aggressive testing of the batsman in the subsequent over. Suryavanshi responded by hitting Siraj for a six, but eventually fell short of a century for the second consecutive game when he was caught at deep third man off a short delivery from Rabada.

The targeting of a 15-year-old cricketer with persistent bodyline bouncers caused visible concern for Irfan Pathan. Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the former swing bowler explained that while he understands the competitive environment of senior professional cricket, his protective instincts as a father made the tactical choice difficult to accept.

“Bodyline bowling to stop 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi doesn’t fit well with me. I know he is playing against the big boys but the father in me doesn’t agree with that.”

Despite the physical challenge, Suryavanshi’s technical maturity won plaudits from Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara, who reiterated his belief that the young prodigy is fully prepared for an imminent national call-up to the senior Indian squad.

Suryavanshi’s statistical output across the tournament has established him as one of the most prolific young batsmen in modern domestic cricket. This unprecedented run-scoring form has significantly enhanced his commercial valuation. According to Indian media reports, multiple major corporate entities, including prominent domestic tyre manufacturing brands, are competing to secure the sponsorship rights for his cricket bat. Reports indicate that Suryavanshi—who currently receives approximately ₹50 lakh annually from his equipment deal—has been presented with lucrative new contract offers valued at up to ₹12 crore per year, alongside open financial terms from brands eager to secure his endorsement.
