Over two months after the conclusion of the Big Bash League on 25 January, Bangladesh spinner Rishad Hossein has received a major accolade for his maiden campaign in Australia’s premier T20 tournament. Cricket Tasmania announced at their annual awards night that Rishad, playing for the Hobart Hurricanes, has been named the team’s Player of the Season.
This recognition is particularly remarkable as it was Rishad’s first appearance in the Big Bash. The leg-spinner claimed a tournament-high 15 wickets for the Hurricanes, equalling the top tally among all spin bowlers in the competition. His consistency throughout the season was noteworthy, maintaining an economical rate of just 7.82 runs per over, highlighting both control and effectiveness.
Alongside Rishad, two other spinners – left-arm spinner Cooper Conolly of the Perth Scorchers and leg-spinner Lloyd Pope of the Adelaide Strikers – also finished with 15 wickets each, but Rishad’s all-round impact ensured he was singled out for the award.

Rishad was up against formidable teammates for the Player of the Season nomination, including batsman Nikhil Chowdhury, who scored 307 runs, and pacers Nathan Ellis and Chris Jordan, who took 14 and 7 wickets respectively. Despite their strong contributions, Rishad’s consistency with the ball proved decisive.
In the women’s category, the Hobart Hurricanes’ Danni White Hodge claimed the award after amassing 432 runs in the most recent season, playing a pivotal role in guiding her side to their first Big Bash title.
Cricket Tasmania presents these awards annually across multiple categories, celebrating exceptional performances and recognising talent across both men’s and women’s competitions. Rishad’s achievement underscores the growing impact of Bangladeshi cricketers in elite international T20 leagues, signalling the rise of a new leg-spin talent capable of excelling on foreign pitches.
His breakthrough season not only highlights individual brilliance but also enhances the profile of Bangladesh cricket abroad, inspiring emerging players to pursue opportunities in competitive leagues like the Big Bash. For Rishad, this award marks the perfect start to what promises to be an exciting T20 career in Australia and beyond.
