Hardik Pandya Flag Controversy Sparks Debate

The controversy arose from Hardik Pandya’s manner of displaying the national flag during the post-match celebration. Eyewitnesses reported that Pandya wrapped himself in the Indian flag and lay down on the stadium grass, a gesture that quickly went viral on social media. While some fans viewed it as a harmless expression of exuberance, others considered it disrespectful to the national emblem.

In response, Pune-based lawyer Wajid Khan filed a formal complaint against Pandya at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station. Police officials confirmed on 11 March that the complaint had been registered as part of the initial FIR process. Khan argued, “The national flag is not a personal accessory or entertainment prop; it is a symbol of the nation’s honour. Wrapping oneself in it and lying on the ground constitutes a legal offence under Indian law.”

Initially, local authorities hesitated to accept the complaint, citing that the incident occurred in Ahmedabad rather than Pune. However, Khan maintained that the national flag represents all citizens of India, and any citizen has the right to lodge a grievance regarding its misuse. The police subsequently accepted the written complaint and provided Khan with a copy.

India’s Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 governs the protection of the national flag, stipulating legal penalties for acts deemed disrespectful. While Indian cricket has seen flag-wrapped celebrations before — notably Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after the 2024 T20 World Cup final victory over South Africa — the current controversy centres specifically on lying down with the flag, an act perceived by many as crossing a symbolic line.

Public reactions on social media have been mixed. Some view Pandya’s actions as an innocent celebration, while others insist it undermines the dignity of the national emblem.
