Bangladesh Pace Attack Edges Pakistan: Shanto

Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has stated that, at present, Bangladesh hold a slight advantage over Pakistan in terms of pace bowling strength. While acknowledging Pakistan’s long-standing reputation for producing high-quality fast bowlers, he emphasised that Bangladesh’s recent consistency with the ball has given the team added confidence.

Shanto noted that both sides possess strong pace attacks and that Pakistan’s fast bowlers remain highly skilled. However, he pointed out that over the past few years Bangladesh’s seamers have demonstrated sustained performance levels, which, in his assessment, places them marginally ahead at this moment. His remarks reflect an evaluation based on recent form rather than historical standing.

A key development for Bangladesh is the return of Taskin Ahmed to the Test squad after an extended absence. The right-arm fast bowler had been out of regular red-ball cricket due to injury concerns and workload management. Shanto expressed satisfaction at his inclusion, stating that Taskin’s presence contributes significantly to team balance and simplifies leadership decisions on the field.

According to the captain, Taskin has consistently shown an interest in playing Test cricket. His return followed consultations with team physiotherapists and trainers, all of whom were satisfied with his fitness condition. Although he has not featured regularly in recent red-ball matches, he has maintained his preparation standards, ensuring readiness for international competition.

Shanto also highlighted the importance of emerging pace talent Nahid Rana. He remarked that he has known Rana from an early stage and is familiar with his approach to preparation and match awareness. This understanding, he suggested, is beneficial from a captaincy perspective, as it allows for better utilisation of the bowler’s abilities during matches.

The Bangladesh captain expressed optimism that Nahid Rana, currently in good form, will be able to sustain his performances in the upcoming series. He indicated that having a mix of experienced and developing fast bowlers strengthens the team’s overall pace unit.

The current composition and roles within Bangladesh’s pace attack can be summarised as follows:

BowlerRoleKey Attribute
Taskin AhmedSenior fast bowlerExperience; return after injury management
Nahid RanaEmerging fast bowlerStrong recent form; disciplined preparation

In summary, Shanto’s assessment underscores a shift in Bangladesh’s pace bowling profile, driven by consistent performances in recent years. While maintaining respect for Pakistan’s established fast-bowling tradition, he considers Bangladesh’s current unit to be slightly ahead based on recent output and reliability.
