Nepal Cricket Advised to Limit Social Media Use

Nepal’s national cricket team, which had impressed global audiences in the previous T20 World Cup by narrowly challenging teams such as Bangladesh and South Africa, has faced a more challenging start in this year’s tournament. Despite showing flashes of their potential, the side suffered a heavy defeat to newcomers Italy, losing by ten wickets, which has set them back in the competition standings.

Following two consecutive losses, Nepal’s head coach, Stuart Law, has issued firm guidance for his players to reduce their engagement with social media. Law stressed that the immediate priority for the team must be on analysing performance differences between matches rather than public or online distractions.

“Step away from social media,” Law urged. “The focus should now be on understanding the reasons behind the contrasting performances against England and Italy.”

Law highlighted the dual nature of social media in Nepalese cricket culture. “It is deeply woven into our society, but it can also be a source of major distraction. Players who devote excessive attention to online popularity, endorsements, or sponsorships risk neglecting team strategy, the guidance of their peers, and ultimately their own performance.”

While acknowledging the commercial and promotional benefits that social media provides, Law was unequivocal about priorities. “Cricket comes first, especially in a World Cup. Strong performances on the field naturally lead to popularity. There is no need for repeated online self-promotion if we maintain consistent victories.”

He added, “I am something of a ‘dinosaur’ in the social media era, but I try to help players strike a balance. Off-field activities are fine, but when they are on the pitch, their attention must be fully on cricket. Anything else is, in my view, unproductive chatter or distraction.”

Law’s advisory is primarily aimed at enhancing the team’s mental stability and collective focus. By minimising the influence of social media, Nepalese cricketers have the opportunity to maximise their performance on the field, laying the foundation for future surprises and potential upsets in international tournaments.
