Mustafiz Dropped from IPL Team on Indian Board’s Orders

Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman was slated to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise, owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, had acquired him in the December auction for a record ₹9.2 crore, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.

However, escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh have now forced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to intervene. In a formal announcement, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board had instructed KKR to remove Mustafizur from their squad due to political sensitivities and public pressure surrounding his participation.

Initially, the BCCI had followed a “wait and observe” approach, but the mounting controversy prompted them to take decisive action. Speaking to Asian News International (ANI), Saikia said:

“In view of recent developments, the BCCI has directed the KKR franchise to release their player, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from the squad. Should KKR wish to sign an alternative player, the board will permit the replacement.”

The issue had already attracted public attention when a senior leader of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh labelled Shah Rukh Khan “anti-national” for signing Mustafizur. Several prominent spiritual leaders in India also criticised the decision, turning the signing into a politically charged debate.

KKR had purchased Mustafizur at the IPL auction in December, setting a new benchmark for Bangladeshi cricketers. His record price underscores the growing demand for his left-arm pace and death-over expertise.

This incident highlights the interplay of sports and geopolitics, a recurring theme in international cricket. While KKR now seeks a suitable replacement, Mustafizur’s IPL participation remains uncertain, pending the franchise’s decision and BCCI approval.

The controversy has sparked debates among fans and commentators about political interference in sport, raising questions about the future of foreign players from countries with tense diplomatic relations with India.
