West Indies all-rounder Rovman Powell has expressed pride in his tenure as T20I captain, describing it as “pretty successful” and “very good” after leading the team from ninth to third in the world rankings. Powell, a dynamic middle-order six-hitter, also celebrates a personal milestone of over 100 T20I appearances for the Caribbean side.
Powell captained West Indies in 37 T20Is from March 2023 to December 2024, including the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. Reflecting on his captaincy, Powell told ESPNcricinfo, “You start your career aiming to play for West Indies, and now I’ve played over 100 T20Is. Moving the team from ninth to third is something I feel truly proud of. It’s the little achievements in your career that matter.”
He highlighted the leadership experience as a platform for fostering dialogue with players across domestic and international leagues. “Being captain allows you to interact with players, observe their skills, and guide them on what they need to do to reach the West Indies team. It was a very rewarding experience,” Powell said.
Taking over from Nicholas Pooran, Powell prioritised international cricket while balancing a busy franchise career. He has played for ten teams across seven global T20 leagues, including the IPL, ILT20, and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). To manage a packed schedule, Powell selects competitions that do not clash with international fixtures, ensuring he can maintain performance levels without burnout.
As a middle-order batter, Powell prefers batting at No. 5, where he can construct an innings effectively. Out of 105 innings at No. 5, he has scored 2,069 runs at a strike rate of 146.11, compared with 75 innings at No. 6. “At No. 5, I have the opportunity to build an innings rather than just hitting a few balls,” he explained. He emphasised understanding game conditions, pacing the innings, and seizing opportunities to make meaningful contributions.
At 32, Powell has passed the T20I captaincy baton to Shai Hope. With the ILT20 concluding in early January and the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka starting February 7, Powell is focused on helping West Indies advance further in the tournament and leaving a lasting impact on the team’s T20 legacy.
