India Find Comfort After Kuldeep’s 3-Wicket Spell

On the opening day of the Guwahati Test, India’s left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav delivered a masterclass in spin bowling, claiming three crucial wickets and keeping South Africa firmly under control. Despite a solid start from the Proteas’ top order, no batsman could convert their innings into a substantial score, leaving South Africa 247 for 6 at the close of play in 81.5 overs.

The visitors began positively, with openers Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen showing composure against the new ball. However, India’s disciplined attack struck early. Jasprit Bumrah broke the opening partnership by dismissing Markram for 38 before lunch, signalling the first breakthrough of the innings. Soon after, Kuldeep Yadav asserted his authority, sending Ryan Rickelton back for 35, demonstrating his ability to control the tempo of the match with sharp spin.

South African captain Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs attempted to steady the innings with a brief but determined partnership. Bavuma, in particular, displayed his class, hitting two consecutive boundaries off Mohammed Siraj while reaching the milestone of 1,000 Test runs in his career. Stubbs looked promising, reaching 49 before falling to another clever delivery from Kuldeep, while Bavuma was dismissed shortly after for 41.

Lower-order resistance from Wayne Moolman and Tony de Zorzi provided fleeting support, but India’s pacer Mohammed Siraj wrapped up the final wicket of the day, ensuring South Africa could not establish any substantial partnerships. Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with one wicket, complementing the combined efforts of India’s bowlers to maintain pressure throughout the innings.

India can take considerable comfort from Kuldeep’s bowling performance, which prevented the Proteas from dictating terms on a pitch offering some assistance to the spinners. With the bowlers in control and South Africa under pressure, Day Two promises to be a crucial test for the visitors, who will need a substantial partnership to build a challenging total.
