Zimbabwe aims to surprise India in a thrilling contest.

Zimbabwe’s Super Eight campaign got off to a harsh start as they succumbed to a heavy defeat against the West Indies, falling short in their chase of 254. Yet all-rounder Ryan Burl remains optimistic, seeing glimpses of hope even in that setback. Burl believes that the key to challenging India lies in exploiting the diversity of Zimbabwe’s bowling attack.

On Thursday, Zimbabwe faces India on the slow, black-soil pitches of Chennai for their second Super Eight match. Richard Ngarava returns to the side, joining fellow towering pacer Blessing Muzarabani, giving Zimbabwe a distinct height advantage in their pace department.

Bowling Options: Height and Spin in Focus

Zimbabwe’s bowling arsenal is far from one-dimensional. Alongside leg-spinner Graeme Cremer, captain Sikandar Raza offers both off-spin and mystery spin, while Wellington Masakadza provides left-arm finger spin. Burl is confident in the range of options at their disposal.

“We have plenty of options in the team. Right-arm and left-arm pacers, leg-spin, off-spin, left-arm spin… Ultimately, it will come down to the match-ups and the combination we choose,” Burl said ahead of the India game.

India’s lineup features several left-handed batters, notably debutant Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan at the top of the order, which may influence Zimbabwe’s use of Raza with the new ball. Despite suffering a finger injury in the West Indies match, Raza has recovered fully and bowled comfortably in practice sessions.

However, Zimbabwe’s main hope remains Muzarabani. Standing at an imposing 6 feet 9 inches, the pacer consistently troubles batters with his high release point and extra bounce. He has already claimed 11 wickets in the tournament so far, trailing only Shardul Thakur in the wickets tally.

Burl is particularly buoyed by Muzarabani’s return to full fitness:

“He missed a few games due to injury and there were doubts about his fitness, but his comeback has been phenomenal. His height and ability to angle the ball sharply make him a real challenge for right- and left-handers alike. Having him in the team gives us immense confidence.”

Zimbabwe’s confidence has also grown from recent exposure to stronger opponents. Although they were not part of the 2025 Test Championship, they have played almost as many Tests as Australia and recently secured a two-match T20 series victory over Sri Lanka.

“Everyone believes in a good blueprint and process,” Burl added. “But it comes down to execution on the field. It’s the combination of all elements that brings results.”
