In a remarkable move for associate cricket, Cricket Namibia has appointed Gary Kirsten as a consultant ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The South African icon, renowned for his exemplary batting career and high-profile coaching stints, is expected to bring invaluable expertise to the Namibian setup.
Kirsten’s international career boasts 7,289 runs in Test cricket and 6,798 runs in ODIs, highlighting his consistency and skill as a batsman. Yet, it is his coaching pedigree that is most compelling for Namibia. He guided India to glory in the 2011 World Cup, has coached South Africa and Pakistan, and played a key role in Gujarat Titans’ inaugural IPL championship in 2022.
Speaking on the appointment, Kirsten said: “It is a privilege to work with Cricket Namibia. Their dedication to developing a high-performance cricket culture is truly impressive. The new cricket stadium underscores their ambition to compete with the world’s best. I look forward to contributing to their preparations for the T20 World Cup next February.”
During his tenure, Kirsten will work closely with head coach Craig Williams, helping Namibia refine strategies, optimise player performance, and adopt advanced techniques to compete on the global stage. Cricket analysts note that his mentorship could dramatically enhance Namibia’s competitive edge, especially in high-pressure T20 scenarios.
Namibia has made significant strides in international cricket in recent years, displaying determination and skill that have seen them climb the ranks. The addition of Kirsten, a figure synonymous with World Cup success, reflects the country’s ambition to be taken seriously among the cricket elite.
The presence of a seasoned consultant like Kirsten is expected to have ripple effects beyond the senior team, inspiring upcoming talent and providing a blueprint for professional development. With the T20 World Cup looming, Namibia’s fans are hopeful that Kirsten’s expertise will translate into victories, helping the team make a significant impact in what is set to be a thrilling tournament.
