What Shanto Said About Continuing as Captain

After the Test series in Sri Lanka, Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down from captaincy. Since Bangladesh didn’t play any Test matches afterward, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) hadn’t named a new Test captain. Now, the board has confirmed that Shanto will continue leading the Test team.

Shanto will captain Bangladesh in the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle, the BCB announced today in a press release.

He first took over as Test captain in 2023. So far, under his leadership, Bangladesh has played 14 Tests—winning 4, drawing 1, and losing 9.

Speaking about continuing as captain, Shanto said, “I truly feel honored to have the opportunity to continue leading the Bangladesh Test team. I am deeply grateful to the board for the trust and confidence they have shown in my leadership.”

He added, “Leading my country in Test cricket is one of the greatest sources of pride in my life. I will do my utmost to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to me with full dedication.”

BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul believes Shanto’s leadership qualities have positively impacted the team’s growth. He said, “Shanto has patience, commitment, and a deep understanding of Test cricket. Under his leadership, we’ve seen improvement and confidence within the team. The board believes that maintaining leadership continuity will help us perform better in the new Test Championship cycle.”
