Melbourne Renegades maintained their stranglehold on the 2025 Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) with a convincing four-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder at Junction Oval. In a match that swung like a pendulum, it was Georgia Wareham’s masterful all-round display that proved decisive, guiding her side to successive wins and asserting her status as one of the competition’s standout performers.
The Thunder began brightly after being sent in to bat. Openers Georgia Voll and Tahlia Wilson laid a solid platform, amassing 60 runs without loss and looking set for a formidable total. However, the middle overs witnessed a dramatic collapse. Key wickets fell in quick succession, including Phoebe Litchfield and Chamari Athapaththu, reducing the Thunder to 79 for 4. Experienced campaigner Heather Knight and rising star Anika Learoyd sought to stabilise the innings with a 39-run partnership, but the Renegades’ bowlers, led by Wareham and Deandra Dottin, applied relentless pressure.
Despite a late flourish from the lower order, Sydney Thunder managed only 148 for 7 from their 20 overs, setting a competitive but chaseable target.
The Renegades started assertively. Davina Perrin exploded in the opening over with three boundaries, yet her wicket fell on the final ball. The Thunder struck back by removing Courtney Webb and Naomi Stalenberg cheaply, momentarily placing the defending champions under pressure.
It was then that captain Georgia Wareham took charge. With impeccable timing and power, she blazed her way to 58 off 32 balls. Wareham’s commanding innings was supported by Alice Capsey (30) and the composed Nicole Faltum (37*), ensuring the target was reached comfortably with 11 balls to spare. Wareham also contributed with the ball, taking 2 for 25 and reinforcing her all-round credentials.
The victory bolsters the Renegades’ position in the WBBL standings, highlighting the combination of experienced leadership and youthful exuberance that defines their squad.
