The Man Behind 33 Tests and 57 ODIs—Cricket Mourns an Iconic Umpire

The cricketing world, particularly in Pakistan, is mourning the loss of Khizer Hayat, a respected former cricketer and former ICC umpire, who passed away in Lahore after a prolonged illness. He was 86. The news of his death was confirmed by his family and subsequently reported by Pakistani media outlet Geo Super, marking the end of an era for Pakistan’s officiating fraternity.

Hayat’s cricket journey began long before he stepped onto the international stage with a white coat. As a young cricketer, he represented Pakistan Railways in first-class cricket. Although he did not reach the pinnacle as a player, his deep understanding of the game paved the way for a remarkable umpiring career that would eventually earn him international recognition.

He embarked on his umpiring career in the 1970s—a period when consistent and neutral umpiring in Pakistan’s domestic circuit was still developing. Through fairness, discipline and unwavering commitment, Hayat quickly established himself as a trustworthy official. His ability to remain composed during heated match situations earned him respect from players and administrators alike.

Hayat’s biggest breakthrough came when he officiated his first Test match in Australia. From that point forward, he went on to umpire 33 Test matches, a significant achievement for officials of his era. In addition, he stood in 57 One Day Internationals, gaining a reputation for calm decision-making and a firm understanding of the Laws of Cricket.

Beyond the boundary, Khizer Hayat made notable contributions to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He served as a general manager, an umpire, and a referee—playing a vital role in strengthening the board’s officiating standards. He also dedicated time to developing younger umpires, sharing his experience and guiding them into higher levels of the game.

The PCB expressed deep sorrow following his passing. Chairman Mohsin Naqvi paid tribute, saying:
“Cricket umpiring will forever remain grateful for Khizer Hayat’s contributions. His legacy will continue to guide future generations of umpires for years to come.”

Hayat’s death leaves a profound void in Pakistan cricket. For more than four decades, he served the game with dignity, humility and professionalism. Though often away from the spotlight, he played a vital role in upholding the spirit of cricket—ensuring the game was played fairly and with respect.
