In the third and final T20 against the West Indies in Chattogram, Tanijid Hasan Tamim delivered a brilliant batting performance. He came very close to a century but eventually remained unbeaten on 89. While his innings could not lead Bangladesh to victory, he set an extraordinary record.
This left-handed opener reached 1,000 runs in international T20s in just 42 innings, becoming the fastest Bangladeshi to achieve this milestone. Previously, the record was held by Towhid Hridoy, who had reached 1,000 runs in 45 innings. Tamim broke that record three matches earlier, making history at the age of 24.
He was dismissed in the final over, finishing with 89 runs off 62 balls, including 9 fours and 4 sixes. Despite his stellar innings, Bangladesh could not avoid a whitewash. The West Indies won by five wickets, taking the three-match series 3-0.
Although Tamim now holds the Bangladesh record, the world record for the fastest 1,000 T20 runs still belongs to England’s Dawid Malan, who achieved it in just 24 innings.
When Tamim came out to bat in Chattogram, he had 967 runs in T20 internationals. Early in his innings, he survived two catches and successfully reviewed another close chance. After that, he played with confidence, executing shot after shot with ease.
He completed his tenth T20 half-century in just 37 balls. This was his fifth fifty in the last 12 innings and his second consecutive fifty.
