Sri Lanka Unveil Surprise 25-Man Preliminary Squad for T20 World Cup

In a move that has taken fans by surprise, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced its 25-member preliminary squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup scheduled for next year. The announcement comes with a major shake-up in leadership, as Dasun Shanaka is reinstated as captain, replacing Charith Asalanka.

Following Sri Lanka’s disappointing campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Dasun Shanaka had stepped aside, and Hasaranga de Silva assumed the role of captain. However, under Asalanka’s stewardship, Sri Lanka endured a series of setbacks. Out of 25 T20 matches, the team secured only 11 victories while suffering 12 defeats. In bilateral series against India, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, the team struggled to find form. Moreover, Sri Lanka failed to reach the final of the most recent Asia Cup.

Asalanka’s personal form compounded the team’s woes. Across 23 innings in 25 matches, he scored just 368 runs at an average of 19.36 and a strike rate of 135. Consequently, the SLC opted not to include him in the World Cup leadership plans, though he remains part of the squad as a senior player. Dasun Shanaka, a seasoned campaigner, has previously captained Sri Lanka in 53 T20 matches, achieving 24 wins against 27 losses, bringing invaluable experience to the team.

The squad blends seasoned veterans with promising young talent, ensuring a balance of leadership, experience, and fresh energy as Sri Lanka aims to make a strong showing on the world stage.
