The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has announced a series of changes to the squads selected for its much-anticipated Victory Day exhibition match, following the withdrawal of five national cricketers, including opening batter Soumya Sarkar. The celebratory fixture, scheduled to mark Victory Day on 16 December, will see the country’s leading players divided into two symbolic sides — Odommo (Indomitable) and Oporajeyo (Unconquered) — in a gesture of remembrance and sporting unity.
CWAB had earlier unveiled the squads for the friendly encounter, but revisions became necessary after Soumya Sarkar opted to pull out. Alongside him, Nasum Ahmed, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Sheikh Mehedi Hasan, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib have also withdrawn their names from the originally announced line-ups. While the association has not disclosed specific reasons for the withdrawals, such changes are not uncommon in exhibition fixtures, often influenced by fitness considerations, workload management, or personal commitments.
Soumya Sarkar had initially been named in the Odommo squad. His withdrawal has paved the way for Naim Sheikh, who now joins the Indomitable side, strengthening its batting resources. Meanwhile, the Oporajeyo squad has been reinforced with the inclusion of Jisan Alam, SM Meherob Ahin, Rakibul Hasan, and Ripon Mondol, all of whom step in as replacements for the departing players.
Leadership roles for the prestigious match remain unchanged. The Odommo side will be led by Bangladesh’s current One-Day International captain, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, whose all-round abilities and calm leadership are expected to anchor the team. The Oporajeyo team, on the other hand, will be captained by Najmul Hossain Shanto, a cricketer widely admired for his composure and technical finesse.
The Victory Day exhibition match has become an important annual tradition, blending sport with national pride. More than a competitive contest, the game serves as a tribute to the spirit of resilience and sacrifice that underpins Bangladesh’s history. For fans, it also offers a rare opportunity to see established internationals and emerging talents share the same field in a relaxed yet meaningful setting.
With the revised squads now confirmed, anticipation continues to build among supporters eager to witness a fitting cricketing celebration of Victory Day.
