Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been hit with a substantial financial penalty after his side twice fell foul of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) slow over-rate regulations in quick succession. Within just two matches of the ongoing season, Iyer has accumulated fines totalling 3.6 million Indian rupees (36 lakh), underscoring growing concerns over his team’s inability to complete their overs within the stipulated time.
The first breach occurred on 31 March in New Chandigarh during Punjab Kings’ clash against Gujarat Titans. On that occasion, the side failed to maintain the required over rate, resulting in a penalty of 1.2 million rupees imposed on the captain. However, matters worsened just days later when Punjab again breached the regulation against Chennai Super Kings on 3 April. As it was the team’s second offence of the season, the sanction was significantly escalated to 2.4 million rupees, bringing Iyer’s combined personal fine to 3.6 million rupees.
Under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, teams must commence the 20th over within 90 minutes of the innings beginning. Failure to comply results in penalties for the captain, with repeated offences attracting harsher sanctions. In addition to Iyer’s punishment, all Punjab Kings players, including the impact substitute, were fined either 25 per cent of their match fees or 600,000 rupees, whichever was lower.
The disciplinary repercussions also had on-field consequences. In the match against Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings were required to restrict their field placements to just four fielders outside the 30-yard circle during the final two overs, a restriction that significantly alters bowling strategy and often benefits the batting side at a crucial stage of the game.
Summary of Penalties
| Date | Opponent | Offence | Captain’s Fine | Team Penalty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 31 March | Gujarat Titans | Slow over-rate (1st offence) | ₹1.2 million | Standard warning/penalty |
| 3 April | Chennai Super Kings | Slow over-rate (2nd offence) | ₹2.4 million | 25% match fee or ₹600,000 (whichever lower) |
| Total | — | — | ₹3.6 million | Applied per match rules |
Concerns have also emerged regarding Punjab Kings’ bowling discipline. Against Gujarat Titans, the side conceded 11 wides and a total of 14 extra runs, contributing directly to delays in completing overs. Such inefficiencies, if not addressed, could lead to further sanctions, including the possibility of a one-match suspension for the captain should slow over-rate offences persist.
Elsewhere in the league, Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma was also penalised for misconduct during their match against Kolkata Knight Riders on 2 April. After being dismissed, Sharma displayed visible dissent towards the umpire’s decision and was fined 25 per cent of his match fee along with the addition of one demerit point.
With disciplinary scrutiny intensifying, Punjab Kings now face mounting pressure not only to improve their on-field execution but also to ensure stricter adherence to over-rate regulations, which are increasingly shaping outcomes in the high-stakes environment of the IPL.
